A Backbeat of Community

Every couple of months, I revisit the incredible spotlight pieces on the CFC website, reading them and thinking how lucky I am to get to know and share time and space with you all. It's a privilege to be part of a community that brings so much goodness, light, and love into the world. I appreciate many of you sharing your work, your wisdom, and your heart. So I've included a small handful of quotes from past spotlight pieces. And below Tim Vogt's quote, I attached a special photo taken with him this past October. Here is the link to the CFC website with the full writings.

Through my time working with Jay, I learned the importance of taking time to get to know people and listening patiently to their stories. He never seemed in a hurry and always valued people over tasks. I’m smiling now as I’m writing this, thinking about the years we worked together and how he modeled a way of life that has shaped my approach to life and how I see the world.

What I could change was my attitude, perspective, and ability to make the change I wanted to see. My pivot resulted in the creation of The Extended Family, which in turn has yielded to date, more than 48,000 meals distributed to our food insecure neighbors: prepared, packed and delivered by our intrepid participants whom we call, Dreamers.

It was an unexpected moment of oneness with the natural order: the river that runs from the mountains, rolls over waterfalls, creates points for cities and history to develop, is at ferry crossings and under bridges, tumbles into rapids, into a playground for a group of individuals in an ad hoc community, taking turns at success, helping, cheering and watching out for each other as time flows continuously around them.

We know how to build long and strong trust.  We know how to have patience with other peoples’ children. We know how to relate to people who like to be loud and people who like to be quiet.  We know how to keep politics from destroying connections.  We know how to be joiners and celebrators of other peoples’ things, even if we’d rather not (And we truly often would rather not).  We know how to value the stability of old neighbors and remain open to the disruption of new ones.  Sometimes it feels like this is the worst thing we ever did. But it also brings us the deep joy of sharing memories that are decades old, or watching the long story unfold.
