Question for Alice:

Can you recall a specific moment in the last four months that you were in what you would consider to be “nature” and thought or felt for at least a split second that “maybe all is actually right with the world” ?

Alice's Response:

I spent several days last week on Deer Isle, Maine, a bridged island "DownEast" where my 89-year-old mom lives by herself.  Howard and I walked each day.  Our current favorite route is a loop that starts down a quiet road, passes fields and woods and rambles by several stoney coves.  Many of the granite islands that dot Penobscot bay were visible, and the water had a light chop.  The birch and pine still bore signs of the recent storms.  The woodpeckers chased hawks from their trees.

Each day our vista was a bit different, yet the natural beauty of this hardy island has remained untouched in many ways and stands in striking contrast to the headlines, politics and disharmony of the world.  What a beautiful place to grow old and how lucky we are to spend time there, I thought.

Above us, the crows performed their acrobatics.

Amanda’s thought…

I suspect Alice would love all direct responses from you.  I find it incredibly encouraging when I hear from any of you after I share my thoughts. It is powerful for me. I assume many others have a similar experience. So here is Alice's email… pip

Alice, whenever I walk in nature with my sister Christina she always points out tiny details that I would have otherwise missed. And after reading your note I was reminded of pausing and noticing those glimmers around me, AND why I appreciate people who point them out. Also, this is now the second time in a spotlight piece that someone (Eric Hopkins!) has mentioned Deer Isle, Maine. So I looked it up and wow  Now I understand! Thank you, Alice.
