Question for Mike:
Does one person first come to mind: In your very very first “adult” job -- when you were perhaps first out of college or over the age of 21 let’s say – is there someone that pops to mind who brings a smile to your face not because of anything in your specific relationship but just because of who they were or how they moved through the world?
Mike's Response:
Thanks for letting me reflect on this question for a few minutes as it has brought a smile to my face. Nalini Kaplan was my first supervisor at American Management Systems, as well as a trailblazer who led with an uncommon blend of confidence and poise. This was during a time when being a woman executive in technology was even more exceptional than it is now. Her leadership style was an inspiring mix of sensitivity and directness, something I have always strived to emulate. Nalini was still early in her career, but she had wisdom. She imparted a simple life lesson that stuck with me through the years: "Regardless of who we are and what we do, we all have 24 hours in a day to use however best we can." I’ve come to use this insight, which I later discovered originated from footballer Sam Huff, as a prompt to live intentionally, to make choices that align with my values and to contribute positively whenever possible. Each time I think about the quote, I remember my fondness for Nalini, and I am fascinated by the frequency that I think of her after all these years. Nalini has no idea of her influence on me, but I am inspired to find her and send her this paragraph.
Amanda’s thought…
I suspect Mike would love all direct responses from you. I find it incredibly encouraging when I hear from any of you after I share my thoughts. It is powerful for me. I assume many others have a similar experience. So here is Mike's email… pip
After reading this lovely note from Mike I emailed him back wondering if there was a way he actually could find Nalini and reach out. And within minutes he answered - he already had!!! After receiving permission, I attached a screenshot of her response below. Thank you, Mike. It makes me really happy that this reflection ended up creating a bridge for a special reconnection.
