Question for Matthias:
What is one thing that is small and perhaps nuanced or surprising and perhaps typically sub conscious that you can tell drives you each day ?
Matthias' Response:
Experience:
My days follow two main patterns:
A. Routine – Going to the Office
B. Being in an Unfamiliar Place
In both scenarios, I start my day by reflecting on what might bring me joy.
When following Option A, my routine often begins with a bike ride along the Hudson River. However, depending on the kind of environment I want to experience, I might switch things up and ride through the city instead, immersing myself in its dynamic energy.
For Option B, when I’m in an unfamiliar place, I typically start my day by working through emails. Right now, I’m sitting at The Ned in Doha, overlooking a lush terrace with the Doha skyline in the background. I could choose any spot, but this view inspires me and sets a positive tone for the day.
The same mindset applies to work. When I’m in the office, I make it a point to visit everyone’s desk, sit with them briefly, and engage in discussions about their design work. These interactions spark creativity and deepen our connection.
Even with food, I’m intentional. I never settle for something just because it’s there—I choose meals that bring a sense of joy. Healthy options can be just as satisfying when approached with this mindset.
I’ll admit, there are moments when I need to remind myself to focus on the experience. But when I do, it’s incredibly rewarding.
I suspect Matthias would love all direct responses from you. I find it incredibly encouraging when I hear from any of you after I share my thoughts. It is powerful for me. I assume many others have a similar experience. So here is Matthias' email… pip
Amanda's thought…
Matthias, your piece has me thinking more about the notion that sometimes it's the small initiatives and subtleties throughout the day that make the greatest difference. It may be the slight adjustment in a thought pattern or perspective, the moment of genuinity with others and self, or the ability to lean into intuition that seems to create that sense of "flow." I often feel it's these various nuances coming together that inspire access to pockets of energy and focus and curiosity throughout the day and its work. Thank you, Matthias, for this thought-provoking share.
