Question for Muayyad:

Does one person first come to mind:        In your very very first “adult” job -- when you were perhaps first out of college or over the age of 21 let’s say – is there someone that pops to mind who brings a smile to your face not because of anything in your specific relationship but just because of who they were or how they moved through the world?

Muayyad's Response:

Two professors, Mischa Schwartz and Thomas Stern of Columbia University, have had a profound impact on my life and career as an engineer.

Professor Schwartz’s lectures and books were a masterclass in clarity and insight. His approach to simplifying complex concepts made learning accessible and enjoyable. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the intricacies of communication systems, I found myself eager to delve deeper. His patient demeanor and willingness to answer every question, no matter how basic, instilled in me a confidence that has carried through my career. Sometimes, he would say, “A little thought will indicate,” which actually meant deep thinking!

Professor Stern brought a vibrant energy to his teachings that was both engaging and inspiring. His knack for connecting theoretical concepts with practical applications illuminated the intricacies of information theory. Professor Stern’s method of teaching encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving, skills that are invaluable. He fostered an environment where curiosity was celebrated and learning was a collaborative journey. I learned a lot as his teaching assistant too!

Together, Professors Schwartz and Stern didn’t just teach me about communication systems; they cultivated a passion for the subject. Their influence extended beyond the classroom, shaping my approach to work and my professional ethos. They exemplified the power of education and the lasting impact a dedicated teacher can have on a student’s life.

In essence, the presence of these two exceptional professors laid the foundation for my career, and their teachings continue to resonate with me after nearly 50 years!

I suspect Muayyad would love all direct responses from you.  I find it incredibly encouraging when I hear from any of you after I share my thoughts. It is powerful for me. I assume many others have a similar experience. So here is Muayyad's email… pip

Amanda's thought…

Muayyad, I love how you described the environment your professors curated - one that stimulated inquiry, collaboration, and application. And I also admire that you specifically remember a meaningful saying of his. I feel recalling these small nuances keeps someone's spirit and energy with me, even if I no longer see them physically. And I was so glad to hear you got in touch with Professor Schwartz after writing this special note. Thank you, Muayyad.
